Ed is a relatively newcomer to Proto48. One of his first models is this Atlas cylindrical covered hopper. The model has been re-detailed and weathered to represent cars you would see today.
The detailing includes replacing the oversized plastic grab irons with scale brass wire custom bent to fit the location. The brake platform, chain and retainer valve were replaced. The Apex running boards were not changed since none are available commercially. Instead, Ed decided to use a little weathering to blend them in.
NWSL wheels were used along with scratchbuilt bolsters to covert the Atlas trucks to P48. The couplers are San Juan Type-E and have a lower operating lever. They ride in scratchbuilt draft gears.
The model was weathered using a combination of acrylics, gouache and water-mixed oils. The reporting marks are fictional but the overall effect is very realistic.
